EARTHDAY.ORG’s mission is to broaden, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide. Founded in the United States, and celebrated on 22 April annually, the first Earth Day in 1970 saw twenty million Americans mobilised to call for greater protection for the planet. Growing exponentially in the intervening fifty-five years, the 2025 event involved more than a billion people worldwide with upwards of 75,000 partner organisations participating.

Acquarius’ green and sustainability achievements are many and varied. Breaking news is that our new office space in Irish Town employs the most modern up to date techniques. We are particularly proud of our living moss installation that not only looks impressive but has air-purifying properties and is great for staff wellbeing.

Acquarius is by no means new to sustainability. All team members have enthusiastically bought into what we are trying to achieve as a firm. We are particularly proud of the considerable number of small, easy to implement, ideas that collectively contribute to ours being one of the greenest offices in Gibraltar today.

And it is not just me saying this. We were proud winners of the Sustainable Rising Star Award at last October’s Nautilus event, recognising our cumulative efforts and commitment to sustainability.

Our sustainability achievements include the introduction of office-wide recycling with clear guidance on what can be recycled. In partnership with www.recycle.gi, our twice-weekly recycling collection involved upgrading to larger recycling bins to manage increased waste sorting. New battery and vape recycling stations have been installed to encourage responsible disposal.

We have organised internal sustainability initiatives such as our first step challenge and a water consumption initiative to promote healthy, eco-conscious habits.

Our new offices are designed to be as sustainable as possible, including the use of environmentally friendly cleaning products – and, of course, our now famous non-synthetic moss! The on-site servers have been removed, resulting in both lower energy consumption and reduction in air conditioning units. We have taken steps to eliminate paper usage by going completely paperless - significantly reducing paper and ink waste.

Moreover, we have secured green discounts for the firm, including on energy-efficient air conditioning and technical products. Staff benefit too from reductions agreed with e-transport and bicycle retailers to support greener commuting.

We are by no means complacent, but we are proud of our progress thus far. We enthusiastically supported Earth Day on 22 April and continue to encourage innovative ideas from everyone as we settle into our impressive new, green, office space. This is an on-going project and any readers interested in learning more about our achievements to date, and future plans, are most welcome to get in touch with us.
