C19 fact checking

This week I thought why not do some fact checking on the topic of every table top. Covid19. I have used UK as a base point. So.

Firstly the simple facts:

CAUSES

“There is more than one coronavirus and they have existed for years. There is no evidence anyone manufactured it deliberately and it has nothing to do with 5G.”

SYMPTOMS

“There’s no evidence that water or high temperatures will prevent infection, though some are good for your health in general. Washing your hands with soap is best.”

Here are 3 facts from the NHS:

The main symptoms of coronavirus are:

  • a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)
  • a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)
  • a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste(Anosmia) – this means you’ve noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal

Most people with coronavirus have at least 1 of these symptoms.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) also add the most common symptoms are:

  1. A dry cough, fever, and tiredness.
  2. Some people may also experience aches and pains.
  3. Also nasal congestion, a runny nose, sore throat or diarrhoea.

These symptoms are usually mild and begin gradually.

PREVENTION

“There’s currently no proven cure for the virus and you should be wary of methods professing to cure it like hot drinks or gargling salt water.”

There are some interesting facts around in terms of prevention. For instance:

  1. Researchers have found that the virus can live up to 24 hours on cardboard and 2 to 3 days on plastic and stainless steel. The CDC reports that the virus was detected on surfaces of the Diamond Princess cruise ship up to 17 days after passengers disembarked. However, only pieces of the virus were detectable, not viruses capable of infecting a person.
  2. A Chinese study of 2,173 individuals who were hospitalised with COVID-19 found that the proportion of sick people with type A blood was significantly greater than researchers would expect based upon the percentage of people with type A blood in the general population. The study also found that there were fewer sick people with type O blood than would be expected.
  3. There is evidence that commonly used masks, essentially rectangular pieces of material connected to elastic bands, don’t prevent respiratory viruses among healthy people. Although a specific type of mask, the N95 respirator, is useful in protecting health-care workers and others caring for sick patients, it is not recommended for healthy individuals. Masks are, however, recommended for those who are sick to prevent transmission to others.
  4. Travel bans are ineffective due to the early spread of the virus when no one realised people were infected. For such a ban to work now more than 90% of travel would need to be banned AND that would only have a minimal effect.
